SELF 05 / 2019
A Night in Shanghai
At Yuz Museum, a black pavilion opens onto an immersive world of light and film. Alchemist Films captured the installation in its Shanghai setting, moving from the city and museum exterior into the surrounding screen surfaces. The film brings together the scale of the pavilion and the experience of standing inside it, where the artwork extends across walls, ceiling and floor. Shown on 22–24 November 2019, the screen work was curated by Wong Kar Wai, directed by Wing Shya and presented by Anthony Vaccarello.
Cities / International campaign
The city as a screen
Saint Laurent’s moving images enter the urban landscape, unfolding across monumental screens and illuminated façades. Alchemist Films filmed the Shanghai sequence of the international campaign. The coverage places the screens within the surrounding architecture and night-time streets, allowing the city to remain part of the image. The campaign film also includes international locations; our role presented here is the Shanghai filming.
Shanghai production for fashion, art and brand experiences
Alchemist Films supports brands, agencies and production companies filming in Shanghai, from installation films and exhibition coverage to branded content and campaign shoots. Our local production services can be tailored to a visiting creative team or a brief managed from overseas. We help define the crew, location requirements and schedule around the work you need to capture.
Installation and exhibition filming
A film of an installation needs to communicate more than the content on a screen. It should establish the space, the scale of the work and the relationship between the visitor and the image. We can help plan coverage around the venue, from architectural views and installation details to the surrounding city. Screen playback, available light and access windows are considered together when shaping the filming brief.
Local crew and production coordination
We help assemble a Shanghai crew and equipment package suited to the production, with camera, lighting, sound and production support as required. For overseas teams, local coordination connects the creative brief with venue contacts, crew schedules and day-to-day logistics. The level of support can range from a focused filming unit to a broader production team, depending on the locations, technical requirements and scope of the shoot.
Locations and venue access
A museum interior, a retail setting and a public-facing city screen each call for a different production plan. Our Shanghai location and venue support can include research, recces and communication with site contacts. We help clarify access, equipment movement and the time available for filming before the schedule is fixed. Where Shanghai forms one stage of a wider China production, we can also coordinate the local leg with the overall itinerary.
From the brief to the handoff
The intended use of the footage shapes the coverage: a campaign recap, an installation record and a social edit may need different compositions and pacing. Share the creative references, filming dates and delivery requirements at the outset. We can help align the local shoot with the edit, coordinate media handoff and arrange post-production support when needed, so the production brief remains clear from preparation through delivery.
